Harry Kenyon Phinney was born in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1918. He earned a B.S. degree from Cincinnati University in 1941, an M.A. from Albion College (Michigan) in 1943, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1945. He held post-doctoral positions at Yale University and the Field Museum in Chicago before joining the faculty of Oregon State College in 1947.
