Original diagnosis/description

Flowers, unisexual, apedicellate, epigynous, with one whorl of three free tepals at the top of a triangular ovary. Hypanthium with lateral depressions (windows). Ovary unilocular with a single pendant, orthotropous, and bitegmic ovule. Stigma one. Fruit a nut. Seed endotestal; endotesta of a single layer of endoreticulate and crystalliferous cells; exotegmen of a single layer of sclerenchyma cells.

Etymology

From the name part Hedy in Hedyosmum and flos (Latin for flower) to indicate the close similarity to the extant genus.
