Original diagnosis/description
Flower small, actinomorphic. Perianth of nine or 10 tepals that leave larger, narrowly elliptical, transverse scars. Androecium of 20 stamens that leave smaller, rhombic scars. Gynoecium syncarpous, composed of 12 carpels radially arranged around a central column. Union of carpels partly incomplete leaving septal slits between the carpels. Ovary partly inferior. Carpels united for most of their length, free from each other apically. Carpel tips extending outwards with stigmatic regions on the upper half of the ventral sides. Stigma distinctly papillate extending in two narrow crests on either side of the ventral slit. Placentation laminar. Ovules about six per carpel. Ovules anatropous and ascending with two integuments. Attached pollen monocolpate and coarsely reticulate.
Etymology
From the French impressionist artist Claude Monet, in appreciation of his paintings of water lilies.
