Original diagnosis/description

Flower bisexual, trimerous with three long tepals in a single whorl, nine stamens and three carpels. Anthers dithecate and tetrasporangiate, elongate,
filament broad. Pollen monocolpate, colpus long, extending almost to the equator. Exine semitectate-reticulate, with a heterobrochate reticulum, rounded muri and short, densely spaced columellae. Colpus margin well-defined psilate. Orbicules irregular, rounded. Ovary superior.

Etymology

In honor of the German palynologist Eckart Schrank in recognition of his important contribution to Cretaceous palynology and Greek: anthos for flower.

Notes

The name was originally published with an orthographical error as Eckhartianthus. However, it is established in honour of the German palynologist Eckart Schrank, therefore the correct spelling is Eckartianthus (see ICN Art. 60.1, Ex. 7 and Fossil Imprint, 79: 510).
