Original diagnosis/description
Growth ring boundaries indistinct or distinct, wood semi-ring to diffuse porous, 5–20 cells per mm2, vessel diameters 100–200 µm, perforation plates simple, helical thickenings common in vessel elements, axial parenchyma diffuse, commonly in tangential bands up to three cells wide, and scanty paratracheal. Rays 1–3 seriate, up to 29 cells in height, body ray cells procumbent with 1–4 rows of square or wider marginal cells; prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells common.
Etymology
The epithet tuncayi is given in honour of Dr. Tuncay Güner, an acknowledged palaeobotanist working on fossil plants in Turkey.
