Type
Cooksonia caledonica D.Edwards
Original diagnosis/description
Small isotomously branched axial plant with occasional trichotomies. Distal axis segments ending in one sporangium. Sporangium-bearing axis segment widening just below the sporangium. Axis-sporangium junction a well defined concave-downward curve. Sporangium laterally flattened and bilaterally symmetrical. Sporangium circular, oval or reniform in front view, composed of two equal valves. Valves attached to each other at their proximal part and along a subdistal narrow dehiscence line approximately parallel to the sporangium outline. Beyond this line, distal parts of the two valves free from each other. Dehiscence line meets the sporangium outline at the axis-sporangium junction.
