Original diagnosis/description

Cells ellipsoidal to spheroidal, characteristically isolated, occasionally paired, invariably closely associated with numerous other cells in seemingly random array, forming colonies of hundreds of cells that probably were enclosed in a mucilaginous matrix. Individual cells measured range from 3.4 to 8.7 μm ± 0.65 μm in mean diameter. Cells tend to be segregated by size. Cell walls poorly defined. Interior of cell relatively dark, occasionally possessing a diffuse dark spot
