Original diagnosis/description
Leaves with axially attached single fruits. Leaves Fagus-like, shape broadly to narrowly elliptic, measuring 10–24 cm long and 5–10 cm wide; margins regularly dentate, primary teeth terminating secondary veins and usually simple; entire venation pattern beech-like, except for larger number of secondary veins which are usually 19–22 on each side of midrib. Fruit, a single, trigonous, distinctly keeled nut exposed above a diminutive basal cupule; cupule appearing as an expanded apex of fruit peduncle, apical rim irregularly toothed, teeth terminating in free petiolate leaf-like appendages.
