Original diagnosis/description
Fragment of stem composed of ground and tabular parenchyma cells and scattered fibrovascular bundles. Ground parenchyma of rod-like and slightly elongated cells, with intercellular spaces (lacunae). Tabular parenchyma 1 to 3 cells wide, sheathing the fibrovascular bundles. Solitary circular fibrous bundles in the central zone. Stegmatas with spherical echinate silica-bodies in axial series. Fibrovascular bundles irregularly distributed, composed of a fibrous zone (sclerenchyma), vascular zone, and fibrous ventral cap. Fibrous zone reniforme, auricular sinus rounded, and occasionally absent. Vascular zone with one phloem strand, protoxylem vessels, and 3 (1–6) Metaxylem vessels, with scalariform perforation plates and tyloses.
Etymology
The specific name is derived from the Latin prefix ‘sub’ (almost), and the noun ‘antarcticae’ (genitive of Antarctica).
