Original diagnosis/description

Gametophytes thallose, bilaterally symmetrical, unbranched or once furcate; midrib dorsally inconspicuous, flanked by two undissected wings bearing lamellae; lamellae oppositely arranged on dorsal surface of wings, extending from midrib to wing margin, with 12–16 pairs of lamellae per thallus; antheridia spheroidal, in clusters on dorsal surface of midrib area, sometimes associated with small scales.

Etymology

The species is named in honor of the late Alice Elizabeth (Betty) Speirs of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, who collected thousands of fossils from south-central Alberta including those described in this study.
