Original diagnosis/description

Pith composed of parenchyma cells and clusters of sclerenchyma cells. Pycnoxylic secondary xylem. Bordered pits arranged in abietinean type on radial walls of tracheids. Cross-fields with cupressoid oculipores arranged in araucarioid pattern. Rays homogeneous, exclusively uniseriate and with their horizontal walls unpitted. Secondary phloem composed of tangential layers of fibers, sieve cells, parenchyma cells and dispersed secretory ducts. Cortex parenchymatous with secretory ducts.

Etymology

Cratoxylon refers to the geological unit Crato Formation where the fossil specimen was found and the Greek word ξύλον (xylon) meaning wood.
