Original diagnosis/description

Flowers small, actinomorphic and perfect, subtended by two persistent bracteoles. Perianth hypogynous, heterochlamydous; calyx persistent, formed from five free sepals, aestivation imbricate, sepals in the early stage upturned, later spreading, star-shaped, woody, with distinct parallel vascular bundles; corolla sympetalous with five ligulate lobes, constricted below the lobes. Androecium haplostemonous; stamens five, antisepalous; pollen minute, tricolporate, foveolate, and almost smooth. Ovary trilocular; styles three, slender; placentation central and basal; ovules many; fruit a loculicidal capsule, seeds small, anatropous, reticulate.
